Flowers!

Living at the EcoHouse is such a treat. Not only do we have the vegetable garden, the 50 or so bulbs planted last season, and the perrenials Jenny brought to the house in the fall, but we have all the flowers planted by the previous owners of the house to discover!

Since the arrival of the spring bulb greens I have been making a point of checking the gardens to see what comes back to life each day. Cutting through the row of Norway Maples yesterday I nearly trampled the hundred speckles of purple and pink that popped up in the yard. I had just read a post on pansies or violas and could not have been any more excited to discover we have many so many beautiful viola! Quiet and quaint, these little beauties are no bigger than your thumb nail and offer a splendid contrast to the goudy bulbs that are just starting to come out.

In the vegatable garden the spinach that overwintered in the cold frame has been producing for two good weeks now. Radish seedling have sprouted and are just starting to grow their first set of true leaves. They germinated quite slowly for radish, I suspect the chilly nights here are a factor. Red Romaine lettuce seeds from fall's sowing have germinated and growing merrily, and a couple romaines made it through the winter and have begun growing again. Twelve little lettuce seedlings were transplanted out to the frame after being sprouted inside and suffered a couple cuasilites, and I'm hoping this weekend's predicted warm weather perks them up.
